Chronological Roster of Paid PFD
The names and dates of appointment (badge # and retirement if known) have been taken from ball books, department records and personal items. The list is almost certainly not 100% complete and there may be misspellings. Also listed is the highest known rank achieved by the firefighter.
Photos of those attaining a chief's rank or who made the Supreme Sacrifice are shown here and on other dedicated pages. Photos of uniformed Captains are on the "Captain's" pages of the website. For photos of non-officers click on the word photo if it is present.
From 1890 to 2024, 1461 firefighters have served.

Transition from volunteer system to paid department -
1884
The introduction of horses to draw the engines and hose carts led to the appointment of permanent drivers and tillermen - the first step in the change from volunteer to paid department. They received $600 per annum and had no days off. No relief for meal hours. Duties were care of horses and apparatus, floor cleaning. Slept in quarters. In 1887 salary raise to $720 per annum.

Semi-Paid or Call System
1890-1895 Reorganization to Partially Paid Department
Volunteer firemen and city came to a tacit agreement to the establishment of a partially paid department. Each company got 5 permanent men and several call men who responded from their homes to fires but did not ride in firehouses. Previous volunteers were given preference in hiring
