In 1916 the Mariani family started its long PFD legacy when Joseph T. Mariani was appointed as a firefighter and rose to the rank of Captain. He was the father of three sons two of whom rose to the Chief's Officer rank: Eugene and Wilbert. A third son (Joseph T. Jr) worked as MV inspector in Paterson. A grandson, Louis also became a Paterson firefighter.

Appointed PFD on September 1, 1947 – Received Badge # 89 - Promoted to Lieutenant in 1957, Captain in 1961, and Deputy Chief in 1965 and Assistant Chief in 1972 - Retired in 1975 - Died at age 99 in the Boonton Home. one month shy of is 100th birthday

Louis Mariani: Grandson of Captain Joseph T Mariani, son of DC Eugene Mariani and nephew of AC Wilbert Mariani was appointed on November 1, 1971 and assigned to Engine 5. He died in a tragic accident on March 11, 1972. His wife was Corrine Coppo who was daughter of Captain Frank Coppo and sister of BC Tommy Coppo.
