September 16, 1890: The first annual PFD parade and inspection of the paid fire department before thousands of citizens. Robinson's American Band preceded the procession, followed by a PPD platoon headed by Captain Brimson. Then the PFD headed by (acting) Chief Engineer John Murphy and Captains and FF organized by company. Then in numerical order came the horse (beautifully groomed) pulled apparatus and other department wagons.  Especially notable was the big team of black horses pulling "ponderous" Engine 5.
