John McKiernan Born August 13, 1833 Died March 4, 1905. Joined Washington Engine Company 3 in 1852. Became Treasurer in 1855 and 1856 and Foreman in 1859. In 1862 he was Assistant Chief Engineer. Civil War veteran: enrolled September 1862 as a Captain in 25th Infantry (NJ Volunteers). Was a long-time president f Washington Engine 3 and the first president of the Paterson Exempt Firemen's Association in 1892. Brother of 1861 Chief James McKiernan

1873, May: James I. King elected chief for two years (first chief elected for a term of two years. Assistants were William Bailey, two years; Joseph Buckley, one year. Bailey and Buckley were, assistant engineers elect who drew lots to see who would have the two- year term. Bailey was the fortunate man. Thereafter the chiefs and assistants were elected for two years. In 1874 Bartholomew Reilly became assistant.
