When PFD went from Volunteer to a partially paid force in 1890 and then a fully paid force in 1895 there was one Chief and two Assistant Chief Engineers. Not displayed on this page are any Chiefs who had the rank of Assistant Chiefs.

March 27, 1908: The rank of Deputy Chief was established and on April 3 Patrick Sweeney was appointed to the position.​
