Washington Engine Company 3

This company was organized and placed in service April 20th, 1828, in a two-story brick and stone building on the west side of Washington street (hence the company name), below Fair Street. Their first engine was a goose-neck engine built by Ephraim Force, of New York.

Van Winkle, Steward David Pruden, Assistant Steward John Moore. Members Samuel Post, Henry F. Ryerson, Richard L. Van Houten, Thomas H. 1832: Protection Engine 5 organized and there was almost a complete collapse of the majority of Engine 3 members who were residents of Manchester and thus preferred Engine 5. At this time the company had 300' of hose, 2 branch pipes, 4 fire buckets, 1 signal lantern, 2 torches, 1 stove and pipe, 1 glass jug, 1 tin pail, 1 screw driver, 1 monkey wrench, 5 spanners, and 1 quart oil can.
September 1836: Wardens had engine and hose and found them dry and moldy and near being unfit for use. Noting that too many members had been lost and not enough turned out for fires they suggested moving to a new firehouse.
October 1836: the engine was removed to a frame building on Ellison Street (John St), south side, near Prospect Street. The house built by David Strong adjoined that of the Hook and Ladder house (Eagle H&L 1). A newly organized company was formed. A bridge was constructed to cross a nearby brook.

April 24, 1838: Fire in small building on Main Street opposite Van Houten Street at 1:00 AM. The engines repaired to the spot. The minute book of Engine 3 states: Engine No. 3 took water from No. 2 and played into No. 4. No. 3 sucked No. 2 dry three times and "washed" No. 4 during the whole time of the fire.

July 16, 1838:  Blacksmith's shop and stable. Washington and Fair Streets: No. 3 took water from the brook and were about to play into No. 2. But No. 2's company got its dander up about something and would not take water from No. 3. While this quarrel was going on Nos. 1 and 5 got to work and put out the fire.

Washington Engine Company #3 photo shows the first name and middle initial, the last initial on the helmet cannot be made out even under magnification. The identification on back of photo is "John W" and is thus John McKiernan the foreman (as evidenced by the white helmet shield). He is holding an 1860 presentation trumpet from The Jovial Club, of Paterson N.J..  The trumpet is engraved with ivy and flowers around the entire trumpet and has an inscription inside an oval cartouche framed by tree branches. This inscription reads, "Presented by the Jovial Club of Paterson, N.J. to Washington Fire Engine Company No. 3, February 22, 1860." The braided orange cord with tassels is attached to the trumpet by rings in the shape of fire hats. It is currently in the collection of the Smithsonian Museum.

Note: The story is partially false. Engine 3 in Pataerson was called Washington 3 long before the steamer arrived in 1863. The appellation had nothing to do with Washington's birthday.

A supposition is that during a restoration this Washington 3 Engine Lamp did not fit on the 1863 Jeffers as it was likely was from their hose wagon or their later steamer of (an 1881 Amoskeag). A creative person came up with the “swing” hanger idea which could be anchored to the middle par of the steamer. There is a chance the lamp was original but somehow could not be reattached as it should have been and the restorers came up with the “swing.”
