On 2:14 AM, PFD Incident #971643 was the third (previous 1896 & 1904) major historical fire at the mill building (formerly home of Hinchliffe Brewery) at 49-55 Governor Street, between Ann Street & the railroad. It was a General alarm fire with mutual aid. Fought by Tour 4 with Tour 1 relieving.
1997 Mutual aid came from 30 departments, 4 counties. Note: One of Bill Tompkins pics made the cover of the December issue of Firehouse Magazine (see below).
Later in the day, at 9:01 AM an alarm was called in from the fire scene for visible smoke across the river. A working fire was found at 47 Holsman Street. Became a 2nd alarm. Mutual aide units worked that fire.
