April, 1855: A hose company called Columbian at first and later as Columbia was organized. Their first apparatus was a four-spring carriage with three bells. The company were first quartered at John (later called Ellison) street, between Washington Engine No. 3 and Eagle Hook and Ladder No. 1, for a few months, until new two-story brick quarters on Broadway (between Mulberry and Prospect Streets) was built. Their house was furnished in a handsome and costly manner.

1856: A fight occurred in the fall at a fire scene when two members of Hose No. 1 joined Protection Engine No. 5's men in resisting an attack from Engine No. 4's men. As a result, the men of Columbia Hose One were expelled from the department and the Company disbanded: Hose Number 1 demanded a fair trial for their expelled brothers but this was refused, they voluntarily disbanded and ended their career by a sumptuous supper at John Walden's Washington Hotel. Several members then joined Eagle Hook and Ladder Company 1.
