From Rich De Groot - St. Bonaventure’s Lyceum was a gymnasium and parish hall located at 163 Ramsey Avenue across the street from the St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church campus in Paterson. Note: A lyceum is another term for gymnasium. St. Bonaventure’s church history began when Franciscan friars came to Paterson from Germany in 1876 and were given an abandoned Carmelite monastery built the previous year in the Stoney Road section of southwest Paterson. The monastery was advanced to neighborhood parish status in 1877. The church, on Ramsey Street and Danforth Avenue, was completed in 1880. The lyceum building was constructed in 1879 and was first used as a parochial school before being converted into a gymnasium and parish hall. The building was a two-and-one-half-story Type III Ordinary construction brick structure with a peaked roof containing meeting rooms on the lower level, a multi-use gymnasium and parish hall on the upper level, and a bowling alley in the basement. The structure measured about 50-feet-wide by 100-feet-deep and was 32 feet tall. While exact details of the lyceum’s construction are not known, because of the occupancy use as a gymnasium and parish hall, we believe that the roof structure of the building was supported by some type of long span heavy timber truss assembly. This was a common method of constructing a roof in this type of occupancy during the latter half of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century in North America. The fire building faced 50-foot-wide Ramsey Street on Side Alpha. A yard with trees separated the fire building from a one-story storage warehouse that was part of a chemical company complex on Side Bravo. Side Charlie backed up to a section of the abandoned remains of the Morris Canal. This area later became the right-of-way for Interstate Route 80 as it travels through the city. On Side Delta was a three-story wood frame convent. The building was not equipped with a fire alarm system or an automatic fire sprinkler system. A fire hydrant fed from a six-inch water main was in front of the convent of Side Delta. The nearest fire alarm call box was located a block and a half away in front of Public School No. 7 on Carlisle Avenue.
